What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy is a client-centric practice that helps you become independent and enhance your well-being.

Occupational therapists (OT) are healthcare professionals who use occupational therapy practices to gain a comprehensive understanding of how injury and illness impact a person’s daily life. Our work is achieved through the assessment of a client’s physical, cognitive, and social/psycho-emotional state, as well as the evaluation of their behavioural skills and functional abilities.

In addition, our OTs expedite the clients’ recovery by working in partnership with amazing community health care providers such as counsellors, physiotherapists, vestibular therapists, vision therapists, and kinesiologists.

Occupational therapists provide treatments that work towards your goals

Occupational therapy interventions can include:

  • Home and workplace adaptations
  • Prescribing adaptive equipment and tools
  • Improving motor skills (functional movements)
  • Modifying tasks and activities
  • Improving cognitive skills (attention, concentration, memory, problem-solving)
  • Learning to schedule and plan daily activities
  • Educating you and/or your family on diagnosis and symptom management to increase participation and performance of any activities

“She is very attentive to my concerns and explains to me in detail the treatment and the exercises that could be done at home."

We work with other healthcare providers, employers,  and insurers to help you recover as quickly as possible

Based on our assessments:

  • We develop a customized occupational therapy treatment plan to help you function effectively in daily life
  • We identify any needs for other health professionals and treatments
  • We case-manage your treatment plan
  • We create and facilitate a customized Gradual Return To Work (GRTW) Plan
  • We advised on health risk in the workplace

OT’s will first assess your needs, then work with you and your family to collaboratively develop a plan or program in efforts to ensure a more safe, productive, and comfortable life.

"I have a lot of problem that makes my life so difficult, but I did not even know that were my problems. From school, to housework, my relationship, or having a psychological problem, she has given me very helpful advice […] She also sends me supportive tools for daily activities so that I do not find it too difficult to take care of myself and my family."
